Roundup: Pakistan vows to fight terror while fearing backlash of London attacks
font size

Pakistan has condemned the deadly bomb attacks in London on Thursday which killed over 50 persons and injured 700 others, and vowed to fight against international terrorism while fearing the attacks would have an adverse impact on Muslims all over the world.

Both Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz later Thursday sent messages of condolences to British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"We strongly condemn this act of terrorism," Musharraf said, adding "This incident has further fortified our commitment to fight against terrorism. It is imperative that we stand together and further strengthen our bonds of cooperation to eliminate this menace."

Pakistan, like Britain, is a key ally of the United States in its global war on terror and there is about one million-strong Pakistani community in Britain.

On Saturday, Pakistani senior officials reiterated the resolve to work together with the international community in the fight against terrorism.

Talking to reporters in Rawalpindi, twin city of Islamabad, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmad condemned the London attacks.

The whole Pakistani nation shared the grief of the British people, Rashid said, adding "Pakistan strongly condemns all forms of terrorism and the world has appreciated its key role in the fight against the menace."

The entire nation supported President Musharraf's policies and resolved to stamp out terrorism, the minister said.

During a short visit to London on Saturday, Pakistani military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said his country remained committed as ever to fighting the war against terror because it was in its own national interest.

Pakistan was against all forms of terrorism and it would not allow any terrorist activity on its soil, said the spokesman.

While condemning the London attacks and reiterating the commitment to fighting against terrorism, Musharraf on Saturday warned the attacks would have adverse impact on Muslims.

"The London attacks are an open act of terrorism and will have a deep impact, particularly on Muslims all over the world," he said after watching a polo match in Chitral in Pakistan's Northern Areas, adding Pakistan had borne the brunt of terrorism "pouring" out of Afghanistan and had faced "horrendous results."

Earlier reports said the Muslim Council of Britain received 30, 000 hate messages via e-mail before its server crashed on Thursday.

There is a widespread fear of a backlash against British Muslims but no major attack against them or mosques has so far occurred.

However, some 70 incidents of race hate had been logged by the British police, ranging from rattling of railings of Finsbury Park mosque in London to more serious events such as suspicious fires in mosques in Leeds and Kent, Pakistani English-language paper The News reported Sunday.

Musharraf said, "We should move together with the world in the war on terror. This way we will remain on the safe side. If not, then we will face terrifying results."

"The greatest threat we face today is religious extremism and terrorism. We have to fight the perpetrators of such acts otherwise the so-called custodians of Islam will ruin us," Musharraf stressed.
