    Air China sends 7 million Chinese and foreign passengers to Tibet

    Tshering Lhamo, a Tibetan stewardess is serving Tibetan passengers on the Beijing-Chengdu-Lhasa flight on July 12. Till now, China National Aviation Holding Company has operated flight to Tibet safely for 40 years; more than 7 million passengers have taken the flight. Air China also successively opens twelve air routes to the "roof of the world", such as from Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Xining, Qamdo, Hong Kong, Kunming and Shangri-La to Lhasa, and from Chengdu to Qamdo, etc.

    Space shuttle Discovery's launch countdown begins

    250 mln yuan invested to save karezs in Xinjiang

The "Xinjiang Karezs Protection and Utilization Planning Report" was passed recently by the Development and Reform Commission and the Department of Water Resources of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The report preliminarily decided to protect 480 karezs, among which 276 are to be reinforced, 115 are to receive general maintenance, and 89 are planed to be resumed. The protection process costs a total investment of 250 million yuan.

    Over 200 killed in Pakistan trains' collision

    Three passenger trains collided early Wednesday near Ghotki in Pakistan's southern Sindh province, leaving over 200 people dead and more injured.

    80 died in coal mine accident in Xinjiang

    Rescuers back from underground. Till 23:00, July 12, 2005, 80 people had been killed and four injured in the gas blast at the Shenlong Coal Mine in Fukang County of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to the website of the State Administration of Work Safety.

    The Stankovic Cup to kick off in Beijing

    FIBA President Carl Men-ki Ching has pledged to award China 500,000 US dollars if the team wins the Stankovic Cup. The president made the pledge on Tuesday in Beijing, saying the bonus will be out of his own pocket and also expressed satisfaction over Beijing's preparations for the tournament scheduled from July 26th to 31.

    Giant panda Meimei passes away at the age of 36

    A young girl presents flowers to Meimei, the world's oldest domestic giant panda that died at 5:37 p.m. of Beijing time after 20 years' dwelling in the Guilin City Zoo July 12, 2005. The macrobian female giant panda passed away at the age of 36, equivalent to a human being aged 108 on Tuesday. Meimei had been suffering from eating difficulties and gradual failure of varied organs lately, according to sources with the Guilin City Zoo.

    Life in London backs to normal

A TV survey showed that more than 90 percent of Londoners would not change their habits of taking pubic vehicles to get to work despite a string of blasts happened on July 7.

    Death toll of coal mine blast in Xinjiang rises to 76

Rescuers found the dead bodies of 76 miners killed in a coal mine gas blast in the Shenlong Coal Mine of Fukang County, 7 miners were still missing. Some 87 people were working underground when the accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on Monday.

    Five Chinese nurses awarded Nightingale Medal

    Five Chinese nurses who made great contributions to China's medical cause were awarded Florence Nightingale medals by Chinese President Hu Jintao at a ceremony of the 40th Florence Nightingale Medal held in the Great Hall of People in Beijing July 12, 2005.
