New Party Chairman: Chinese should help Chinese
font size

Internal issues of Chinese people should be addressed by Chinese people themselves and "Chinese people should help Chinese", New Party Chairman Yok Mu-ming said in Beijing on July12 in the afternoon.

"I hope our trip this time will inspire Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to jointly work for the rejuvenation of our nation," Yok said at a news conference.

Yok said an often used term in remarks on cross-Strait relations these days is "realizing mutual benefits and a win-win situation".

"To make it possible, we need two conditions, namely people identifying themselves with the Chinese nation and peace," said Yok.

He said the New Party will always work towards improving cross-Strait relations and peace.

The 30-member New Party delegation is on an eight-day trip to the Chinese mainland, set from July 6 to 13, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of China's victory in the resistance war against Japanese aggression. The delegation also dubbed the trip as "a journey of the Chinese nation".

On the same news conference, New Party secretary-general Lee Seng-fong said the Chinese nation must achieve unity on a grand scale to realize a peaceful rise in the 21st century.

"We experienced all sorts of feelings and sentiments over the ups and downs of the Chinese nation in modern times in our visits, " said Lee.

The 30-member delegation from Taiwan has visited the Huanghuagang 72 Martyrs' Mauseleum in Guangzhou, the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre in Nanjing, the former Japan-Russian Prison in Dalian, the Lugou Bridge and the Memorial Hall of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945) in Beijing in its July 6-13 mainland trip.

"Members of the delegation have reached a consensus that drawing from history in the recent 100 years, the Chinese nation must be united on a grand level to accomplish a peaceful rise in the 21st century," said Lee.

Lee also revealed some suggestions made by the New Party on exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Straits, including granting preferential treatment to Taiwan farmers in conducting agricultural production on the mainland, establishing uniform terms in scientific and cultural exchanges and providing more opportunities for Taiwan students to study in mainland colleges and universities.
