New gas reserve found in Tanzania

Recent geological surveys have found that there is a new gas field with a daily production capacity of 10 million cubic feet in southern Tanzania.

The findings were revealed on Tuesday in Dodoma where the Tanzanian National Assembly is currently in session.

Tanzanian Minister for Energy and Minerals Daniel Yona told lawmakers that the natural gas would be used to generate electricity for local consumption and for export as well.

The newly-found gas reserve is located in the Mnazi Bay in southeastern Tanzania's Mtwara region.

Tanzania now has six gas-fired turbine generators in operation using natural gas produced from the Songa-Songa Gas Field also located in southeastern Tanzania.

Electricity generated with natural gas now accounts for 48.6 percent of the country's national power grid supplies of over 600 megawatts. The remainder is from hydraulic power plants.
