A team of experts from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department left for London Wednesday to evaluate circumstances of last week's subway and bus bombings, a police official said.
The sheriff's Terrorism Early Warning Group, which includes emergency management, transit policing and explosives experts and personnel, will make the trip, said Steve Whitmore of the sheriff's department.
An invitation was extended to the sheriff's department -- which polices bus, subway and train systems in the Los Angeles area -- by London's Metropolitan Police Service Commissioner Ian Blair.
The nature of the London attacks provides a valuable opportunity for the department's personnel to learn more about the effects of terrorism and assess the potential for similar attacks in the United States, Whitmore said.
The official added that lessons learned from London would be shared with Los Angeles County law enforcement officials and emergency managers upon their return.
