French President Jacques Chirac on Thursday said no country in the world is safe from attacks like the deadly bombings that rocked London last week.

"These terrorists have a mentality, a psychological state that is different from our own. All efforts must be made to fight against terrorism," the French president said.

"We must constantly adapt our means and ability to respond. We never know what they are going to come up with next, " he said.

He made the remark in his traditional Bastille Day nationally televised interview, postponed 20 minutes to accommodate the EU- wide two-minute silence at 1100 GMT in tribute to the victims of last week's terror bombings, which killed at least 52 people and injured 70 in London.

At the start of the mourning period on the off-day to mark the French Bastille Day, sirens wailed, with flags flying at half mast across Paris, and the metro in a two-minute halt.

Chirac stood alongside British Ambassador John Holmes, visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and the speakers of the French parliament and Senate, Jean-Louis Debre and Christian Poncelet.
