font size

The US dollar fell into the 111 yen range Friday in Tokyo as dealers sold it ahead of the long weekend in Japan and as it is weak against the euro.

At 5 p.m. (0900 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 111.78-81 yen against Thursday's 5 p.m. quotes of 112.30-40 yen in New York and 111.82-84 yen in Tokyo.

It moved between 111.78 yen and 112.40 yen during the day, trading most frequently at 112.13 yen.

At 5 p.m., the euro was quoted at 1.2129-2132 dollar and 135.60- 64 yen, compared with 1.2079-2089 dollar and 135.72-82 yen at 5 p. m. Thursday in New York.

In early deals, the dollar climbed to the day's peak of 112.40 yen, short of the 112.60 yen mark reached last week, the dollar's highest level against the Japanese currency in about 14 months.

Dealers said market players shrugged of Thursday's release of the US consumer price index, which turned out below market expectations, and instead reacted to stronger-than-expected US retail sales data, also released Thursday.
