The Tamil Tigers killed a soldier in eastern Sri Lanka on Saturday, said the police.
The attack took place at Vantharoomulai in the eastern district of Batticaloa around 5 p.m. local time (1100 GMT).
Three soldiers were manning a road check point when members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) arrived and fired at them, the police added.
The LTTE, which is currently involved in a dispute with the government over the security of its senior members traveling through government-held areas, has increased its attacks against members of the security forces in the eastern Trincomalee district.
Nearly 30 people including soldiers, policemen and civilians were injured in a spate of violent attacks between Tuesday and Thursday this week in Trincomalee district.
The Navy in an exchange of fire with the Tigers killed one of their members in one of the attacks.
