Two universities merge in Shanghai

Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai Second Medical University merged on Monday, forming a the new Jiaotong University of Shanghai, according to sources with the new university.

Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Qi and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng attended the merging ceremony. Zhou Ji said that after merging, the two universities are sure to make full play of their comprehensive advantages.

Mayor Han Zheng said the merging is a great exploration effort for implementing cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality to enhance the overall competition capability of universities in Shanghai.

Established in 1952, the Shanghai Second Medical University has graduated more than 27,000 medical personnel in the past 53 years.
