Tim Burton's remake of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,'' starring Johnny Depp, found sweet success at box office in the United States and Canada, grossing 56.2 million dollars in its weekend debut, final figures showed Monday.
"The Wedding Crashers'' -- a comedy pairing Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn -- opened in second place, earning 33.9 million dollars.
Last week's leader, "Fantastic Four,'' fell to third place with a take of 22.8 million dollars. That's a drop of nearly 60 percent from the previous week, but the film still passed the coveted 100-million-dollar mark.
"War of the Worlds'' was fourth with a haul of 15.2 million dollar, bringing its three-week take to 192.4 million dollar, followed by "Batman Begins'', which has earned 183 million dollars in five weeks.
The top dozen films generated a combined 155.6 million over the weekend, up 10.56 percent from the 140.8 million dollars grossed by the top 12 films during the same period a year ago.
The upturn was the second in a row and follows a 19-week box office slump.
