| Three-dimensional traffic pattern formed in Tibet |
|
50 years after the peaceful liberation, especially the 40 years after the founding of Tibet Autonomous Region, Tibet has made considerable progress in traffic. Prior to the liberation, there was no highway in Tibet except a one-kilometer long dirt road linking Potala Palace and Norbu Lingkd, and there was neither airlines nor railway. Nowadays, the highway mileage in Tibet has totaled 25,000 km and air routes directly connect the region with 10 domestic and international cities. The track-laying process of Qinghai-Tibet railway that is now under construction will reach Lhasa soon. By then, the three-dimensional traffic pattern involving highway, airline and railway will transport a steady flow of personnel, material and information to various regions in Tibet, bringing modernity to the ancient plateau.
An internal combustion locomotive passes by Cuona Lake in Naqu region, Lhasa, capital city of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The track-laying process of the Geermu-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet railway launched in 2001 will be completed, and the whole railway will be joined up soon.

Currently, there are Qinghai-Tibet highway, Sichuang-Tibet highway, Xinjiang-Tibet highway, Yuannan-Tibet highway as well as Sino-Nepal highway, with the total mileage reaching 25,000 km in the region.
