Millions of overseas Chinese and Chinese nationals residing in more than 100 countries have played a positive role in promoting the world's diversified culture, said Liu Zepeng, deputy director of the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs in Beijing Thursday at the on-going World Conference.
As one of the four ancient countries in the world with more than 5,000 years of history, China developed a unique culture which is best represented by the Chinese language and its artistic characters, Liu said, adding the position of the Chinese culture in the human civilization has been widely acknowledged.
Overseas Chinese and Chinese nationals residing abroad excelling in both their mother tongue and the native language serve as a bridge between China and the world, Liu said.
He also noted that the Chinese government has made great efforts to teach Chinese to overseas Chinese in order to pass on Chinese tradition and culture. "We are pleased to see that most foreign countries with a multicultural policy understand and support our work," he said.
In recent years, the Chinese government has compiled many Chinese textbooks and reading materials for different countries in the world. Additionally, Chinese teachers were sent abroad to teach Chinese, and many Chinese culture promotion activities were held overseas.
"We have already achieved good results in these moves," he added.
The two-day conference, with the theme of "the Development of Chinese in a Multi-cultural World", has attracted nearly 600 government officials, Sinologists and Chinese learners from 67 countries and regions, among which more than 350 came from overseas.
