Bush assures Britons US support over mass transit attacks in London
font size

US President George W. Bush said on Friday that the United States will stand firmly at the side of the British people one day after a string of failed bombings rattled nerves in London

"The people of Great Britain must understand how strongly America stands with them during these trying times," Bush said at a mass rally in Atlanta.

Noting that "we're engaged in a global war on terror," Bush said, "I am confident, like our country, the citizens of that country will not be intimidated by thugs and assassins."

Explosives specialists said the four bombs which apparently failed to explode on Underground trains and a bus on Thursday bore similarities to the type of al Qaeda-style devices used in the July 7 suicide attacks in London, which killed 56 people and injured more than 700 others.

It was fortunately that no one was killed in Thursday's attack, and only one person was injured.
