A senior Chinese military leader praised Monday the friendly ties between China and Jamaica.

"The bilateral relations have developed steadily since the two countries established diplomatic ties more than three decades ago, " said Xu Caihou, vice-chairman of the China's Central Military Commission.

"The two sides have carried out fruitful cooperation in various fields," he said while meeting with visiting Chief of Staff of Jamaican Defence Force, Hardly Macarley Lewin.

Xu stressed that China attaches great importance to its relationship with Jamaica, saying that it is in the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples to foster a "friendly partnership for common development" between China and Jamaica.

"China is willing to work along with Jamaica and carry out close cooperation to make contributions to safeguarding world peace, promoting south-south cooperation and pushing common development," he said.

Xu also spoke highly of the friendly exchanges between the two armed forces in areas such as personnel training over recent years, saying that they have promoted mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation.

"The Chinese army will continue to develop the friendly and cooperative ties with the Jamaican Defense Force," he added.

Lewin expressed the readiness to make joint efforts with China to further deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation in various areas between the two countries and armed forces.

He meanwhile reiterated that the Jamaican government adheres to the one-China policy.
