Tianjin Port aims to be north China's international shipping center

Tianjin Port in north China aims to build itself into a regional international shipping center, said Yu Rumin, president of Tianjin Port (Group) Co. Ltd. here Wednesday.

By 2010, the port's throughput will reach 300 million tons annually and it will reach 300,000-tonnage level, according to the Port's blueprint.

The port should have the ability of taking in the world's most advanced container ship, bulk ship and most luxurious ocean liners by 2010.

A man-made port, Tianjin Port is one of the world's top ten ports. Its overall economic results ranks first among China's coastal ports.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Tianjin from June 24 to 26, and encouraged Tianjin Port to work hard to build itself into the north China's international shipping center and logistic center.

Tianjin port has the largest container docks, grain docks and coke docks.

Yu said the port will build 16 more container berths. Along with the original 13 ones, throughput of containers will reach 11.75 million of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) by 2010.

The port will also build a 300,000-ton docks of crude oil and LNG (liquefied natural gas) docks, coal docks and iron ore docks.

The overall investment in the five years from 2006 to 2010 will reach 30 billion yuan (about 3.69 billion US dollars), Yu said.
