U.S. calls up 27 Olympic medalists for athletics worlds

The United States set a target of winning 17 to 29 medals at the athletics World Championships which slated from August 6 to 14, as the USA Track and Field called up twenty-seven Olympic medalists on Wednesday.

The American team, who won 25 medals at the Athens Games with mostly youngsters in the squad, named Maurice Greene, a three-time world champion and 2000 Olympic champion in men's 100 meters, in the 400-meter relay pool, alongside DaBryan Blanton, Monzavous Edwards, Mark Jelks and Mardy Scales.

Greene, 31, pulled up with a hamstring injury in the finals at the U.S. Championships and failed to make the team in an individual event.

Olympic Bronze medalist Derrick Brew and Miles Smith was named to the men's 4X400m relay pool, while the women's 4X100m relay pool is made up of Angela Daigle and LaShaunte'a Moore. Monique Hennagan, Suziann Reid and Moushaumi Robinson are in the women's 4X400m pool.

Among the team members are Olympic gold medalists Justin Gatlin in the 100m, Jeremy Wariner in the 400m, Dwight Phillips in the long jump and Joanna Hayes in the 100m hurdles.

Olympic champion Shawn Crawford has withdrawn from his gold winning 200 meters event due to a foot injury, but still plans to compete in the 100m and be available for the 4X100m relay.
