Beautiful elks
Situated in central Jiangsu Province, the Dafeng National Nature Reserve for Elks covers 78,000 hectares of wetland. It is known as the "hometown of elks in China". In 2002 it is listed on the category of world's important wetlands. Thanks to increasing improvement of shelterbelts along the sea, the ecological environment of the nature reserve is well protected. The elk number has increased from 39 to 706. The nature reserve has become a beautiful kingdom for birds, insects, fishes etc.

Ten die in offshore fire in India
Survivors are taken to a makeshift rescue center in Bombay, July 28, 2005. Local media reported that an offshore oil platform under the Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) Bombay High oil field caught fire at 16:00 on July 27. The platform, ships nearby and a rig were destroyed. About 385 people were working there when the fire broke out. Till now 351 have been rescued and ten died.

UK police arrest nine bombing suspects

1st National Sand-Sculpture Contest
Ten large-scale sand-sculptures created by many famous Chinese sand-sculptors on "the first beach in the world", the Silver Beach in Beihai, got their ranking on July 28. "Hometown to south pearls", created by Zhang Yangen, an associate professor of Guangxi Arts Institute, won the first prize. Ten sand-sculptors from various arts institutes and organizations in China took part in the first National Sand-Sculpture Contest. Starting from July 21, they created works with a height of 3.6 meters, covering an area of 25 square meters in seven days. The works mainly feature sceneries and customs of the countries along the ancient "Marine Silk Road" starting form the coast of Beibu Gulf.

Body of wrongly killed Brazilian returns home
The corpse of the Brazilian man Jean Charles de Menezes, who was shot dead by the London police, was sent back to Brazil July 28. The London police mistook Menezes for a suicide bomber and shot him eight times at Stockwell tube station on July 22.

Dance of "Guanyin Buddha" makes a stir in Nanning
Members of Chinese Art Ensemble of disabled people perform a dance named "Guanyin Buddha", Buddhist goddess of mercy at Guangxi People's Hall in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, July 28, 2005. First box beam laid for sea-crossing bridge at Hangzhou Bay
The 1,430-ton box beam lifted by LGB1600 bridge erection equipment, July 28, 2005. On July 28, the constructors succeeded in laying of the first box beam for the sea-cross bridge at Hangzhou Bay in east China's Zhejiang Province on July 28, 2005. The box beam is 50 meters in length and 1, 430 tons in weight. The bridge, 36 kilometers long, has 10.48 kilometers in beach areas, accounting for 29.1 percent of the total length. The commanding office of the project conquered the world-class difficulty in beam-laying at beach and created a record in the world's bridge construction history for "laying beam on beam" of largest weight.

Mubarak to run for next president
