Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Vice President Gilbert Bukenya participated in Thursday's national referendum to decide on whether to return to multiparty politics or retain the Movement system of governance for the east African country.
President Museveni and his wife Janet Museveni voted at Kaaro High School polling station in Nyabushozi county, Mbarara district in southern Uganda, according to a press release issued here by State House.
"Museveni thanked the people of the area for participating in the referendum voting and said that they are exercising in the decision-making process for the future of Uganda," the press release said.
Vice President Bukenya joined other Ugandans in the referendum exercise at Buwanuka Primary School polling station in Kakiri sub- county in Wakiso district, a press release from the VP Office said.
"In a brief address to the people, Bukenya commended the people for exercising their constitutional mandate to determine the political destiny of the country," the press release said.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission announced here this evening that the national referendum conducted well without any incident.
It said that reports reaching in Kampala indicated that the referendum "successful," adding that the referendum officially closed at 5 p.m. (1400 GMT).
The results of the one-day referendum will be announced within 48 hours, according to the commission.
