The electricity generating capacity of China's Three Gorges dam, which is located in the middle sector of the Yangtze River, reached 8.4 million kilowatts by the end of June, according to figures released by the China Electricity Council (CEC) on Friday.

In the first half of this year, the Three Gorges dam, which has been equipped with 12 generating units, produced a total of 20.41 billion kilowatt hours, the CEC said.

According to an investigation of 422 large reservoirs in the country, on July 1 the total amount of water stored was 166.8 billion cubic meters, 21.98 billion cubic meters more than the same period last year.

Due to the abundant stored water, the electricity provided by hydro-electric generators has surged in some provinces, said the CEC.
