EU seeks IAEA special session on Iran's resumption of uranium activities

The European Union (EU) is requesting the International Atomic Energy Agency to hold a special session of the governors' board to discuss Iran's resumption of uranium conversion activities.

"We will be seeking a special session of the IAEA Board of Governors in the next few days to discuss the way ahead," the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain said Tuesday in a letter to Iran's national security council.

The letter, which was also conveyed to the IAEA director general, was made available at the UN headquarters in New York.

"Were Iran to resume currently suspended activities, our negotiations would be brought to an end, and we would have no option but to pursue other courses of action," the letter warned.

The letter were signed by Jack Straw of Britain, Joschka Fischer of Germany, Philippe Douste-Blazy of France and Javier Solana, the EU's high representative for foreign and security affairs.

In the letter, the EU-3 voiced deep concern at Iran's diplomatic note to the IAEA on Aug. 1, which stated that Iran has decided to resume uranium conversion activities at the central city of Isfahan.

The decision, if carried out, "will further heighten international concern about the real objective of Iran's nuclear program," the letter read.

"Iran does not have any urgent operational need to produce fuel of its own, nor any other reason to resume activity at Isfahan, if the intentions of its nuclear program are exclusively peaceful."

In the letter, the three countries reaffirmed that the EU would present a package of proposals by Aug. 7 to resolve Iran's nuclear issue.

"We are concerned that Iran is now proposing to take a step that would terminate our dialogue, before we have presented these detailed ideas," it noted.

Iran said on Monday it would remove the seal on the uranium conversion facilities in Isfahan after Tehran's deadline for the European Union to submit its proposals on Iran's controversial nuclear program was ignored by the EU.
