Fourteen US marines and an interpreter were killed in a roadside bomb attack in western Iraq on Wednesday, the US military said.

The marines, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, were killed when an improvised explosive device hit their armored vehicle near the town of Haditha, some 250 km northwest of Baghdad, the military said.

The names of the killed soldiers were being withheld pending notification of next of kin, they added.

About 1,790 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the US- led invasion in March 2003.
