Iraqi official speaks highly of Kuwait-Iraq ties
font size

A visiting Iraqi official said Monday that Kuwait and Iraq have opened a new chapter in their bilateral ties, the Kuwait News Agency reported.

"The law and wisdom would be the basis upon which Kuwait-Iraq relations would be set in addition to the brotherly ties binding the two peoples," Sheikh Khaled Al-Attiya, representative of the Iraqi prime minister and a member of the National Assembly, was quoted as saying upon departure after concluding a six-day visit. He affirmed that the UN-border fence placed by the international organization in line with the UN resolution 833 has not been removed and a border pipe, recently set up by the Kuwaiti authorities, was situated on the Kuwaiti territory." The Iraqi-Kuwaiti border line has been theoretically and practically drawn but there is a small problem related to encroachment for a few meters by Iraqi farms on the Kuwaiti side of the border," he added.

The Iraqi official noted that the border issue has been settled totally, adding his delegation gathered information, photos and some documents and they would be submitted to the Iraq prime minister and National Assembly "to take a final decision on the nature of cooperation with the Kuwaiti government in this regard. "Al-Attiya's tour in Kuwait was aimed at discussing issues of boundary demarcation between Kuwait and Iraq and collecting information about the common border for Iraqi government and parliament.

Hundreds of Iraqis gathered at the border area of Umm Qasr last week to protest a metal border barrier that Kuwait was building between the two countries.
