The Indonesian government will soon reward amnesty to Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels, no later than two weeks after the signing of a peace pact between the two sides on Aug. 15 in Finland, as part of commitment in the agreement, a minister said here Tuesday.
Indonesian Information and Communication Minister Sofyan Djalil said that most of the rebels will be granted amnesty, except those involved in criminal acts which have no links with the rebellion.
But he said that the government will soon make a clear determination on who could be categorized in that criteria.
"In principle, all GAM members will get amnesty, except criminals. Majority of them will get (amnesty) no more than two weeks after the signing," he said.
He said criminals refer to those who have record found on court, "but the rebels in the jungle would have no problem."
Meanwhile, House Speaker Agung Laksono said that the House will deliberate on who could be granted the amnesty.
Some 3,000 people have been involved in the separatist movement in Aceh province, according to data from the Indonesian military.
The GAM has struggled for establishment of an independent state since 1976, and tens of thousands of people have been killed during the conflict.
