Chen Peisi, one of China's best-known stars who built up his popularity by performing in comedies and writing comedic essays in the 1990s, had faded from the spotlight in recent years.

He resurfaced at a recent press conference promoting his second-round performance tour.

"I earned 60 million yuan (about 7.4 million US dollars) with a gross profit of 20 million (some 2.5 million US dollars) from two of my plays," said a joyful Chen. "I had never made such big money when I was working with movies in the past."

Over the past few years, the comedian has starred in four of his own plays, which have been produced and operated by his own business.

Currently, the government is reforming the cultural sector by allowing nongovernmental investors to participate in making operas, movies and TV shows. But many state-owned theaters and troupes are still financially dependent on the government.

Chen wants to take his own road.

"My plays are not mainstream, but they might be tomorrow," he said.
