Spain flies 85 troops to Afghanistan to boost election security
font size

Spain flew 85 troops Friday to Afghanistan where they will join international forces to boost security for the upcoming parliamentary elections in September.

They are the last of the 500 Spanish troops to be deployed in southwest Afghanistan, the military announced.

Last month, Spain pledged to send a battalion of 500 troops to prop up security during the elections slated for Sept. 18 in Afghanistan, where Spain leads a Logistic Support Unit and a Provincial Reconstruction Unit.

The Spanish contingent is part of the International Force for Security Assistance of Afghanistan authorized by the United Nations.
