Ethiopia's Dibaba completes golden double at Helsinki worlds

Tiruesh Dibaba of Ethiopia added the women's 5,000 meters title to her 10,000m crown at the 10th world championships here on Saturday.

Ethiopian athletes finished 1-2-3-4 in the event. The 19-year-old Dibaba clocked 14 minutes 38.59 seconds for the gold, Meseret Defar finished second in 14:39.54, Tiruesh's elder sister Ejegayehu Dibaba won the bronze in 14:42.47. Meselech Melkamu was fourth in 14:43.47.

Tiruesh Dibaba said: "I am very happy for the sweep. I wanted my team mates to run well, too. I am proud of Ethiopia and Africa.

"For myself, I wanted to win the both races and I did. I am planning to do that next time again. I cannot decide which I like better the 5000m or the 10000m."

Defar said: "This sweep was not really a surprise. We have been training hard and getting ready for these championships. We knew we had this chance."

Ejegayehu Dibaba, who took the bronze in the 10,000m, said: "I am very happy I was able to get a second medal in two competitions. When I came here from Ethiopia I was supposed to run only the 10000m but they decided to put me in 5000m, too.

"I was quite tired after the first race but today I felt ok. The weather suited me well."
