Senior Chinese leader Jia Qinglin called on Buddhists and Taoists of the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to jointly work for peaceful reunification and great rejuvenation of the country on August 15.
"Buddhists and Taoists of the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan share the same roots and instructions and have always maintained sound exchanges," Jia, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said here when he met with a group of Buddhists and Taoists from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
"I hope all of you will inherit and carry forward the fine traditions of China's religious circle in patriotism and religious piety and in upholding peace," said Jia, who is also Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
These religious personnel joined with their mainland counterparts Monday to pray for peace in Beijing and Jiangsu province, an activity organized by the Peace Committee of China's Religious Circle to mark the 60th anniversary of China's victory in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression and the world war against fascists.
Jia said such activities are conducive to furthering understanding and exchanges between religious circles of the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. They are conducive to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the world.
Jia called on the Buddhists and Taoists of the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to resolutely safeguard the sovereignty, dignity and territorial integrity of the motherland and jointly work for its peaceful reunification and great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
