China's 53 national-level high-tech industrial parks with less than ten thousandth of the nation's land have created more than 4 per cent of China's Gross Domestic Product. In 2004, industrial output per square-kilometer land of the zones reached 3.19 billion yuan on average and the added value was 780 million yuan. The exports per square kilometer came up to 120 million US dollars.
All of these were much higher than the national average.
The zones with a great quantity of scientific and technological innovation resources have become the most potential in innovation in the country.
In 2004, the research and development expenditure of the enterprises in the zones reached 61.4 billion yuan, accounting for 33 per cent of the nation's total.
Among the 21 national incubators to facilitate business start-up by returned overseas students, 18 have been set up in the national hi-tech parks.
