China and Sri Lanka have enjoyed regular high-level contacts and enhanced political trust since the two countries established diplomatic ties 48 years ago, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan said in Beijing Monday.
Cao made the remarks when he paid a call to Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who is in Beijing to attend a meeting commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, and on a state visit to China.
The Chinese armed forces are ready to enhance cooperation with the Sri Lankan army in the defense and security fields so as to further consolidate Sino-Sri Lankan military cooperation, said Cao, who is also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a State Councilor.
China appreciates the Sri Lankan government's support to China on the Taiwan, Tibet and human rights issues, Cao said.
Kumaratunga said the Sri Lankan government highly appreciates the precious assistance the Chinese government and people have rendered to Sri Lanka over the past 50 years.
She said she believes Sri Lanka-China cooperation in all fields will continue to be expanded.
