Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday decided to cut short his two-country trip by visiting only China, canceling his plan to also visit Japan in view of the continuing depreciation of the rupiah.
"I have decided to cancel my planned visit to Japan because of our monetary situation," Kalla was quoted by the official Antara news agency as saying.
He said cabinet ministers must help the President to find a solution to the current monetary problem.
Kalla was originally scheduled to make a six-day tour of China and Japan from August 30 to September 4.
But he decided to return to Jakarta after concluding his visit to China Wednesday.
Kalla said under the present circumstances, the united Indonesia cabinet would need to show its sense of unity and support the President in taking proportional measures.
The Vice President had contacted Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Aburizal Bakrie, Bank Indonesia (central bank) Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah and a number of prominent businessmen in the country to discuss the current monetary problem.
