Koizumi may skip UN summit due to election
font size

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is unlikely to attend a special United Nations summit beginning in New York soon after Japan's Sept. 11 general election, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda indicated Thursday.

The prime minister would have to be elected in a special parliament session set to follow the House of Representatives election, regardless of its results, Kyodo News quoted Hosoda as saying.

In addition, Koizumi also needs to stay in Japan to form a new cabinet, making his trip to the United States for the three-day UN conference from Sept. 14 "quite difficult," Hosoda said.

The special UN summit will be held to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The summit will adopt a document, including goals for UN reform.
