Shanghai vows to continue protecting legitimate rights of Taiwan businessmen

Shanghai on Wednesday vowed to continue protecting the legitimate rights of Taiwan business people in the city, following two infringement cases this month.

"The relevant people concerned shall be held for legal responsibility," said Jiao Yang, spokeswoman for the Shanghai municipal government.

According to the local police, the Shanghai Huilian Trade Co. Ltd. and the Shanghai Rose Garden Entertainment Co. Ltd., a Taiwan-funded business, had quarreled over the management of a restaurant in the Jing'an District.

On Aug. 15, dozens of Huilian staff broke into the restaurant and took it up. Local police have asked all the intruders to leave the disputed restaurant.

"That is a case resulted from economic disputes, the Shanghai judicial department will handle it according to law," Jiao said.

In the early Tuesday morning outside the Zunzun Nightclub in the suburb Nanhui District of Shanghai, a Taiwan man was beaten to death by a group of unidentified people.

Li Deyuan, a Taiwan resident, who went to the nightclub Monday night with his father, elder brother and a friend who are doing business in Shanghai. After paying the bill, they had a quarrel with the nightclub attendants and managers.

When the four went out of the nightclub, they were beaten by a group of unidentified people with tools.

Li was badly injured and died in the hospital as an emergent operation failed. The other three are still in hospital for treatment.

"The police are now carrying an all-out investigation into the case. And this is only a single case," Jiao said.

"The Shanghai municipal government will in the future continue to protect the legitimate rights of the Taiwan business people in Shanghai," she added.
