European avant-garde skyscraper Turning Torso
The photo was taken August 31 of the European avant-garde skyscraper Turning Torso recently completed in Malmo of Sweden. The building, 189 meter in height, was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It has nine strata, which consist of five stories each, and 152 units. Each stratum rotates somewhat so that the whole building turns 90 degrees. The lowest two strata of the buildings are offices with the other seven containing 150 luxurious residential units. Together the building totals 150,000 square meters. Santiago Calatrava said the design of the building was inspired by a sculpture of a turning human torso.

South African inventor Sonette Ehlers demonstrates her new anti-rape female condom in Cape Town, South Africa August 31. Ehlers unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world. Relief effort underway in New Orleans

Beijing's policemen have new uniforms
According to the Ministry of Public Security's plan, Beijing police will officially change their uniforms on September 1 this year. The iron-gray uniform shirts and light gray ties will be replaced by light blue shirts and dark blue ties. The dark blue caps will remain. Senior officers will still wear white shirts. The new shirts and ties have been available for policemen at various public security institutions from the end of June this year.

Nearly 2,000 killed or injured in Iraqi stampede
