The current Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano declared Thursday his resignation from the leadership of the Socialist Party (SP) after the final results of the general elections announced.
According to the final results of the Albania's 17th parliamentary elections, which were announced by the Central Elections Commission (CEC) on Thursday, the Socialist Party with only 42 seats among the total 140 ones in the new unicameral parliament was beaten by the opposition Democratic Party, which won 56 seats.
Nano announced the decision at a news conference and authorized SP Secretary-General Gramoz Ruci to lead all the party structures till the extraordinary congress of the party.
"There have been taken all the needed measures for a normal and peaceful rotation of the power to the new government the Assembly of Albania will mandate," Nano also said during the conference.
Albanian President Alfred Moisiu decreed on Thursday the convening of the new parliament on Friday.
