A recent sample survey on tourism in China conducted by American Express shows that Chinese travel on an average of 2.2 times a year, and that number reaches 6 for those with high income.
The survey was conducted in eight metropolitans in China, namely, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Xi'an, covering a total of 4,000 interviewees aging between 25 to 64.
The survey also reveals that the richer Chinese tourists prefer outbound tours. As for those people with a monthly income more than 5,000 yuan, nearly ten percent have at least traveled overseas once in the past years, however, the percentage is merely seven percent among all the interviewees. Hangzhou boasts the largest number of outbound tourist in the eight metropolitans, accounting for ten percent of the country's total.
