Egyptian Judges to supervise presidential election
font size

Egyptian Judges' Club General Assembly on Friday agreed to supervise the Sept. 7 presidential elections on condition that no judges should be excluded from the process, the official MENA news agency reported.

The assembly also recommended that representatives of non- government organizations (NGOs) should be allowed access to the voting centers.

No members of the Presidential Election Committee, which runs the country's first multi-candidate presidential race, should take up positions within the coming six years, read another recommendation.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981 and picked as the ruling party's candidate to run for a fifth six-year term, is competing with nine other presidential candidates in a heated campaigns.

A referendum in May approved a major constitutional amendment proposed by Mubarak, paving the way for the country's first direct multi-candidate presidential election, while abolishing the old system under which a sole presidential candidate chosen by parliament is put to a referendum for endorsement.
