The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday warned that the United States and South Korea should be "entirely accountable" for the adverse impact that a joint military exercise has on the prospect of the six-party talks.
"The US and the south Korean authorities will have to be held entirely accountable for the adverse impact the 'Ulji Focus Lens-05 ' (UFL) will have on the prospect of the six-party talks, peace on the Korean Peninsula and the inter-Korean relations," said a spokesman for the DPRK's Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland's Committee.
"What should not be overlooked is the fact that the plan for the UFL was announced in the day after the north delegation came back from the August 15 grand national festival held in Seoul and it was staged during the temporary recess of the six-party talks," said the spokesman.
The spokesman pointed out that the UFL maneuvers were "fraught with greater danger" because the US "worked out all sorts of war scenarios for preemptive attack on the DPRK" and "massively introduced into South Korea the latest military hardware tested in real wars."
"The situation proved once again who is chiefly to blame for disturbing peace on the Korean Peninsula and escalating the tension and confrontation," the spokesman said, adding that "we cannot but express our serious concern about such a perfidious dialogue partner in the future."
Earlier this week, DPRK's Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun said that the DPRK postponed the second phase of the fourth round of the six-party talks, origninally planned for late August, to mid-Sepetember, citing the military drill as one reason.
The "Ulji Focus Lens-05" military exercise between the US and South Korea started on Aug. 22 and ended on Sep. 2.
