font size

The Angolan national soccer team on Sunday in Luanda have attained an important 3-0 victory over Gabon for the last but one qualifying round of group four for the 2006 African Cup of Nations (CAN) and FIFA World Cup finals, in Egypt and Germany, respectively.

With 18 points in hand and the Angolan team would book its passport for the 2006 World Cup finals if they win in Rwanda next October.

Angola has an advantage against its main opponent, Nigeria, with 15 points, and it will play against Algeria, in Algiers. However, the most dangerous adversary is Zimbabwe with 15 points, as being the only team that in case of equality of points will have an advantage over Angola.

If the Zimbabweans win Rwanda, they go to the last round with only three points less than the Angolans. Thus, the players of coach Oliveira Gonzlves are obliged to win in Kigali to not depend on the match that will take place on the same time between Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

Following are the standings of group 4 (tabulated under matches played, won, drawn, lost, goals for, against, points):

Angola 9 5 3 1 11 6 18

Nigeria 8 4 3 1 11 4 15

Zimbabwe 9 4 3 2 12 9 15

Gabon 9 2 3 4 11 13 9

Algeria 8 1 4 3 6 10 7

Rwanda 9 1 2 6 6 15 5
