Chinese State Councilor Zhou Yongkang on Monday underscored the importance of legal means in coordinating international relations.
Legal circles in all countries have the responsibility to set up a fair and reasonable international political and economic order by means of law, Zhou said in a welcome speech at a reception banquet for participants of the 22nd Congress on the Law of the World.
For years, the Congress on the Law of the World has been providing a platform for exchanges and cooperation among people in the legal circles throughout the world.
Zhou said it is the second time for China to host the congress after the 14th in 1990. Participants will be able to experience China's achievements in its economic, legal and political fields, and promote the world's understanding of China.
Participants will also help expand China's exchanges and cooperation with other countries in the fields of lawmaking, legal education and law research, actively promoting China's legal construction, he said.
Chinese President Hu Jintao said in meeting with participants Monday morning that the Chinese government hopes to help set up a harmonious international society, and is determined to develop democratic legal system, said Zhou.
