Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono looked shocked when he was met face-to-face Tuesday with the remains of a Boeing 737-200 which crashed into a residential area near the Polonia Airport in the North Sumatra capital of Medan.
The plane has hit around 20 homes and a number of vehicles before landing on the crowded Jamin Ginting street earlier Monday. The accident killed 103 passengers onboard the Mandala Airlines' plane and 47 residents on the ground.
"The government bears responsibility of helping those victimized in the disaster," Susilo said in his brief remarks.
Hours before Susilo's arrival, paramedics and security officers were busy collecting body parts from the wreckage of the Boeing and burning cars.
The Mandala crash was the second worst air disaster this year after a Columbian plane crashed in Venezuela and killed 160 people on Aug. 16.
