India-EU summit begins
font size

The sixth summit of India and the European Union began Wednesday in New Delhi, said to launch a detailed action plan for firming up strategic partnership between the two sides.

The Indian side was led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the European Union delegation by British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.

Blair, who arrived here Tuesday night for a two-day visit, had visited Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, before heading for the India-EU summit at Hyderabad House in Delhi.

According to local media, the would-be India-EU action plan will provide the framework for deeper cooperation and engagement over a range of interactions, seeking to intensify economic dialogue and cooperation, trade and investment and intensive political dialogue and co-operation in a bid to face common threats and global challenges like terrorism.

The two sides launched the strategic partnership at the 5th India-EU Summit held last year at The Hague.

Britain holds the rotating chair of EU president now.
