China hopes the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD) would make greater contribution to the world economy especially the development of the developing countries, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday in Beijing.

The premier made the remarks in a meeting with UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi.

Wen said development is the fundamental way for the human race to eradicate poverty and achieve prosperity and stability, and trade is an important means to achieve development.

He noted that UNCTAD has been striving to safeguard the interests of the developing countries since it was established, and it has won the trust and support of developing countries.

The premier also briefed Supachai on China's economic situation and exchanged views with him on the Doha round negotiations of the World Trade Organization.
