Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), said at the ninth China International Fair for Investment and Trade in Xiamen on Sept.8 that the growing Asia was the most vigorous absorber, and China was the most important territory, for direct foreign investment in research and development.

He explained that the human resource development, research capability building and IPR protection make an effective framework for the system to encourage innovation, which help attract more foreign direct investment in R&D.

Dr. Supachai said that UNCTAD's survey on companies which have spent the most on R&D showed that multinationals were more likely than ever to relocate their R&D power beyond their home countries. 69 percent of those surveyed are likely to have more R&D done in foreign countries. And China is the most frequently mentioned name for their expansion, followed by the US and India.
