font size

China is ready to make concerted efforts with other member states of the United Nations (UN) for fruitful results from the UN summit scheduled for Sept. 14-16 in New York, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing Tuesday.

At a routine press conference, spokesman Qin Gang said that as one of the founding members of the UN and a permanent member of its Security Council, China always supports the UN for it to play an important role in promoting world peace and common development.

"A strong UN is in the common interests of the international community," he noted.

Qin said that on Wednesday's UN summit, Chinese President Hu Jintao will expound China's stance on the international situation and major issues, and make specific proposals on enhancing UN's role, the UN reform as well as developing harmonious international relations.

Hu will also announce concrete measures China is to take on promoting economic cooperation with other developing countries, the spokesman said.

Qin said that for the UN summit to be fruitful, efforts should be made in the following four aspects:

First, reiterate commitments to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and promote UN to play a greater role in international affairs.

Second, substantial decisions should be made on the issues of development, such as increasing development assistance, realizing the Millennium Declaration and Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and promoting international cooperation on development.

Third, UN's capability of responding to threats and challenges of all kinds should be enhanced through efficient reform.

Fourth, promote multi-lateralism and enhance solidarity of member states, so as to promote harmonious development of international relations.
