China's top legislator Wu Bangguo's attendance at a parliament speakers' gathering in the United Nations and visit to Morocco are of great significance and have achieved fruitful results, a senior Chinese official said Tuesday.

The Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is an important international meeting on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, said Cao Weizhou, deputy secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC).

Some 150 parliament speakers from 142 countries and regions attended the Sept. 7-9 conference at the UN headquarters in New York, said the official, who accompanied Wu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, throughout the tour.

Wu's attendance at the conference has achieved significant results, Cao said.

-- Playing a constructive role in pushing forward multilateral cooperation:

In a speech delivered at the three-day conference, Wu elaborated on the international situation in the past 60 years since the end of World War II.

He called for stronger multilateral cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, mutual trust and common development.

Wu said the United Nations and the UN Security Council should play a positive role in international affairs, and the IPU needs to reinforce its substantive interaction and coordination with the world body.

China will unswervingly stick to the road of peaceful development, he reiterated in the speech.

-- Establishing and improving the regular exchange mechanism between Chinese NPC and the parliaments of other countries to promote the relations between China and other countries comprehensively:

In New York, the top Chinese legislator held separate talks with the parliamentary leaders of Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Kuwait and South Korea; had a breakfast with parliamentary leaders from a dozen Asia-Pacific countries; and conducted wide-range contacts on various occasions with them and reached broad consensus with them.

All these developments are of great importance to promoting exchange and cooperation between the Chinese NPC and its counterparts in all the other countries.

-- Strengthening exchange and dialogue with US to push forward the constructive partnership between China and the United States:

During his stay in the United Nations, Wu held talks with US Senate President Pro Tempore Ted Stevens and had a phone conversation with US House Speaker Dennis Hastert. They reached a number of common understandings.

They agreed that both China and the United States are countries of major influence in the world; Sino-US relations are important relations between nations, currently enjoying a good momentum for development on the whole; and despite differences over some issues, the two countries have common interests more than differences and there exists a broad foundation for cooperation.

On Wu's visit to Morocco, Cao said the visit is important as it is the first visit to the African country by a member of the new Chinese leadership as well as by a NPC chief since the two nations established diplomatic relations 47 years ago.

During the visit, Wu held talks with Morocco King Mohamed VI, Prime Minister Driss Jettou, Chamber of Representatives President Abdeloughed Radi and Senate President Moustapha Okacha.

Wu's visit is very fruitful, productive and reached the goals expected, said Cao.
