FM spokesman on UN rejection of Taiwan's "representation" proposal
font size

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing Wednesday that Taiwan as part of China is not qualified whatsoever to join in the United Nations, which is made up of sovereign countries.

Qin made the remark on the rejection of a proposal on the so-called Taiwan's "representation" in the United Nations.

In the early morning of Sept. 14, the General Committee of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly refused to put such a proposal on the agenda of the session.

Since 1993, the Taiwan authorities have goaded annually a small handful of countries to raise such proposals to the UN General Assembly, but those proposals all ended in failure, the spokesman said.

Any actions breaching the tenet of the UN Charter and the

Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly, or challenging the one-China principle universally acknowledged by the international community will absolutely not supported by the vast majority of UN member countries, Qin said.

The peaceful reunification of China complies with the fundamental interests of all Chinese including the compatriots in Taiwan, Qin said. "The Chinese government, with greatest sincerity, has been making utmost efforts to strive for the peaceful unification."

The situation across the Taiwan Straits has eased off as the exchanges have made progress this year under joint efforts of relevant departments, said Qin.

"The Taiwan authorities did not stop their secessionist activities, even raised such proposals to the UN General Assembly regardless of our sincerity," said Qin.

"The Taiwan authorities should stop all secessionist activities and come back to the one-China principle," Qin said.
