60th UN General Assembly starts general debate
font size

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan opened a General Assembly session Saturday with a call to implement the what world leaders had agreed on in the Outcome Document adopted on Friday.

"Now we turn to a new task: to implement what has been agreed, and keep working to bridge differences that remain. The Summit outcome imposes new responsibilities on each of us individually, and on all of us collectively. Many items must be completed during the 60th session of the General Assembly," he told the 191-member assembly.

His comments came a day after world leaders ended a three-day summit by endorsing a watered-down document on UN reform after heated debate. Some of the controversial issues were not fully dealt with because of vast differences among member states.

"I intend to follow through on every action asked of me. I ask you, the member states, to tell me immediately if you think I am not doing so," he said.

"So let us get to work, confident and determined. If we do what we have promised this week, we will help save millions of lives, and give hopes to billions of people. That would be a fitting achievement to mark the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, and a platform from which to do even more in the years ahead," he said.

After Annan's speech, the 60th session of the UN General Assembly began its general debate Saturday.
