HK organizations demand Japanese PM stop visit to Yasukuni Shrine
font size

September 18 marks the 74 anniversary of the "Sept. 18" Incident, the beginning of the Japanese invasion of China's northeastern provinces. Several HK organizations took to the street and headed for the Japanese Consulate General in Hong Kong demanding that Japanese Prime Minister and cabinet members stop visiting the Yasukuni Shrine enshrining Class A war criminals of World War II.

The demonstrators called for vigilance against restoration of Japanese militarism and demanded Japan's withdrawal from the Diaoyu Islands and its apologies to invaded countries during WWII.

The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions also organized protest on September 16. Spokesperson with the social policy committee of FTU expressed opposition to Japanese prime minister and senior officials' visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. The spokesperson said Japan must face up to history and forbid publication of history textbooks that distort its aggression in China.

The Japanese government must strengthen education of its nationals and let younger generations have correct understanding of the untold calamity brought about by Japanese militarism on the peoples of the invaded countries and regions, so as to prevent repeat of the history.
