Koizumi reelected PM at special parliamentary session
font size

Junichiro Koizumi was reelected prime minister at an extraordinary parliamentary session on Wednesday.

Koizumi is expected to remain all cabinet members unchanged at least until the end of the special session on Nov. 1.

Koizumi came to power in April, 2001, and was reelected for his second term in 2003. The premier has said he would step down when his LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) presidency ends next September.

The session is expected to debate on postal reform bills and a bill extending by one year Japan's assistance to the US-led antiterrorism operations in Afghanistan.

In the general election on Sept. 11, the Liberal Democratic Party and its ruling partner -- the New Komeito party -- won a combined 326 seats in the 480-seat lower house.
