Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks on Tuesday with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the sidelines of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Li stressed that the Taiwan issue is the most sensitive and most important issue between China and the United States.
China appreciated the commitments US President George W. Bush reiterated in talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao in New York earlier this month on adhering to the one-China policy and observing the three Sino-US joint communiques, Li noted.
China hoped that the US side will adhere to its commitments and cooperated with the Chinese side to maintain the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits as well as the Sino-US relationship.
Rice said the US side understands the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, and will not change its one-China policy.
The two leaders said both China and the United States will cooperate with each other to implement the important consensus reached between the heads of state of the two countries recently, and further strengthen the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.
They also spoke highly of the achievement reached during the fourth round of the six-party talks held in Beijing, and exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
